1.5 คำกริยา + คำบุพบท (กริยาวลี) (PHRASAL VERBS OR TWO-WORD VERBS)
Phrasal verb คือกลุ่มคำที่รวมกันขึ้นโดยมีคำกริยาเป็นตัวหลักและอาจจะประกอบด้วย prepositional adverb (adverb ที่มีรูปเดียวกันกับ preposition) หรือ preposition อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง หรือทั้งสองอย่างก็ได้ กลุ่มคำนี้จะทำหน้าที่เป็นกริยาและมีความหมายเฉพาะของมันเอง ซึ่งอาจจะต่างไปจากความหมายปกติของคำแต่ละคำที่มารวมกัน และถือว่าเป็นสำนวน (idiom)
· verb + prepositional adverb หรือ verb + preposition เช่น
look + over = inspect
approve + of = confirm
make + out = understand
look + after = take care of
· verb + adverb + preposition เช่น
put up with = tolerate
look forward to = anticipate
· ในกรณีของ verb + preposition และ verb + adverb + preposition จะมีคำนามหรือสรรพนามซึ่งทำหน้าที่เป็นกรรมตามหลังอยู่เสมอ เช่น
The committee approved of the plan.
We look forward to the trip.
ส่วนในกรณีของ verb + prepositional adverb หากมีกรรมในประโยคด้วยแล้ว กรรมอาจจะอยู่ท้ายหรืออยู่ระหว่าง verb และ prepositional adverb ก็ได้ ดังเช่น
He looked over the map. หรือ He looked the map over.
She put on her hat. หรือ She put it on.
CONVERSATION 1
A: Do you want to look over this again?
B: Is there anything wrong?
A: I just want you to look out for mistakes that I might have missed.
B: I'll take care of it right away.
CONVERSATION 2
A: Why don't you look it over again?
B: What's wrong?
A: I'd like you to check out spelling for some of the words.
B: I'll get to it now.
