o ใช้ในความหมาย ควรจะ (ทำบางสิ่งบางอย่าง) เช่นเดียวกับ should แต่ให้ความรู้สึกที่จำเป็นและเร่งด่วนกว่า
เช่น You are very sick. You ought to go and see a doctor.

o ใช้แสดงถึงการกระทำซึ่งเป็นหน้าที่หรือสมควรที่จะกระทำ
เช่น We ought to begin our work.

o ใช้แสดงการคาดคะเน ความน่าจะเป็น
เช่น Mitch ought to be home by now.

o ใช้ในรูป ought to + have + กริยาช่อง 3 เพื่อแสดงถึงการละเลย ไม่ได้กระทำสิ่งที่ควรกระทำ
เช่น You ought to have asked the teacher's permission before leaving class.

o เมื่อใช้ในรูปปฏิเสธ เติม not ข้างหลัง ought (โดยมีรูปย่อ oughtn't)
เช่น We oughtn't to go to the party tonight.

o เมื่อใช้ในประโยคคำถาม วาง ought ไว้ข้างหน้าประโยค
เช่น Ought they to come with us?

B: I'll call him when I get to Bobby's house.
A: But I think you ought to ask him first.

CONVERSATION 2
A: You ought to ask dad for his permission before using the car.
B: I'll give him a call from Bobby's house.
A: I still think you ought to tell him first.
